This story is about the COVID-19 intensive care unit at Marseille’s La Timone hospital during Christmas, when France declared the highest daily number of COVID-19 cases ever recorded due to the new Omicron strain. I secured week-long access to the hospital over both Christmas and New Year’s. The ICU allowed visits from families during the holiday period which saw relatives like Amelie Khayat share a tender embrace with her childhood friend turned lifelong lover and husband, Ludo, after he spent 24 days in a coma due to coronavirus. During a time when families are supposed to be together, nurses and doctors took a moment in between shifts to share a meal on Christmas Eve.
