In the beginning of 2020, the World had to face modern history’s greatest crisis. The COVID-19 epidemic reshaped the everyday life of Hungary, but also that of the Uzsoki Street Hospital in Budapest. The true heroes of the year were those doctors and nurses who battled the epidemic on the front line while risking their lives everyday amidst extraordinarily difficult circumstances. The Uzsoki Street Hospital in Budapest has functioned as an epidemic hospital since the first wave and the fight against coronavirus at the hospital has an eerie resemblance to healthcare on a battlefield: desperate patients, riskful environment to personal well-being, an invisible and deadly enemy, extreme physical and mental fatigue, as well as a rising death toll. The number of cases in Hungary has reached 39,000 since its outbreak last year in spring. Considering the population of the country, this number is proportionally so high, that it positions us among the most affected countries.
