Pawel started his journey into the photography profession as a 16-year-old freelancer for the Warsaw-based Daily Newspaper “Zycie Warszawy”. Later, he joined weekly magazine “Perspectywy”. Starting in 1991, he was employed as a staff photographer for the Polish Press Agency (formerly the CAF). He joined Reuters in 1994 in Warsaw covering the transformation of Eastern Europe and Former Soviet Union, the fall of the Iron Curtain and the Berlin Wall. He was based in New Delhi where he led a team of photographers covering South East Asia and the aftermath of September 11 in Pakistan and Afghanistan. After moving to London in 2013, he was named deputy editor, Pictures EMEA and the head of the London Picture Desk. From 2015, he is based in Berlin where he is responsible for the Central European region. His duties also include managing the Global Sport Pictures coverage, and organizing events like Olympics or World Championships.
