Hundreds of Greek firefighters fought desperately on August 8 to control wildfires raging on the island of Evia that have charred vast areas of pine forest, destroyed homes and forced tourists and locals to flee. About 300,000 acres of woodland ended up scorched in different parts of Greece this past summer, during the country's worst heatwave in 30 years. Thousands of animals lost their lives.
